Matthew 9:27 As Yeshua went on from there, two blind men began following him, shouting, “Son of David! Take pity on us!” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came up, and Yeshua said to them, “Do you believe that I have the power to do this?” They replied, “Yes, sir.” 29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it happen to you according to your trust”; 30 and their sight was restored. Yeshua warned them severely, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But instead, they went away and talked about him throughout that district.
Son of David?
I’ve got a $1000 that says there’s not one person alive that knows my ancestor back through 28 generations. I get it, David was famous but that’s 1000 years. How on earth did this news get out? I don’t really have an answer but thought it was interesting they knew Yeshua’s lineage. Moving on…
Being the Son of David may be a minor detail but an important one. You may recall, a salt covenant was established with David that promised the kingship to his lineage for all of time:
2 Chronicles 13:5 Don’t you know that Adonai, the God of Isra’el, gave rulership over Isra’el to David forever, to him and his descendants, by a covenant of salt [which is unbreakable]?
Forever. Unbreakable.
David to Babylonian Exile
Babylonian Exile to Jesus
Look at the names (1-13) above. None of them held the position of king. So how does “forever” translate here when we have direct evidence they were not kings?
Simple. They were.
You see, we have very definite ideas of what we think certain things mean. If we don’t see it, it isn’t real. But that doesn't mean it isn’t real. We have very limited views and our understanding always comes up short.
These people were kings even though the earth didn’t recognize them. This is critical for our understanding. What kind of authority does a king have? Absolute. When a command goes forth, it goes forth.
But did they know the kingship was within them? They may have known David was their direct ancestor but they did not realize they were kings. If they had, they would have had incredible spiritual authority.
We think David was given the kingship forever in the physical sense. But look at Yeshua. He knew He descended from kings and He exercised that authority in full.
Is that what these men saw? (yes, I know they were blind but that makes it even more authoritative)
Was it the kingly authority Yeshua was walking in that made sense to them? If He had no authority, then how could the body respond? If He had no authority, how could the demons release their hold?
But He had absolute authority. And He’s given it to us also, but asked us to use it wisely:
John 14:12 Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever trusts in me will also do the works I do! Indeed, he will do greater ones, because I am going to the Father. 13 In fact, whatever you ask for in my name, I will do; so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me for something in my name, I will do it.
The King has given us His signet ring. If we use the King’s Name, we also have His authority. Think long and hard about this. Do the Master-servant parables carry a little more meaning now?
This is all true as long as we believe one thing…
“Do you believe that I have the power to do this?”
Well, do you?
I feel like this question is one each of us really needs to consider. Point blank, do you believe?
On a cerebral level, I think we all believe He can do whatever He wants. But we don’t really believe it, do we? If we did, we’d be able to see.
So what is it that keeps us from moving into this space? Basically, we can’t be bothered. We’ve got so much going on that we can’t even take a moment to ask ourselves if we believe. If we do, we may teeter on the verge of laying down all we hold dear and getting to that place of true belief -- then the phone rings.
But suppose for a moment, just for a moment, that you could muster up just a shred of belief. What do you think could happen?
Likely, the miraculous.
“Let it happen to you according to your trust”
Uh-oh. It seems as though we can’t hide behind our words any longer. Our ability to see rests 100% in our ability to believe we can see. Our ability to be healed rests 100% in our ability to believe we can be healed.
This is next level accountability. All the world can simply look upon us and see exactly where our trust lies.
If you’re anything like me, you need evidence first. Let me see it, then I’ll believe it. Because what happens if I believe and it doesn’t happen? I’ll get embarrassed. All of the naysayers would then be fully equipped to turn on me and they would have every right to completely embarrass me.
Go back to that list of kings.
How many of them let the kingship pass right on through their lives because they “knew” they weren’t kings?
How many people suffered at the hands of the demonic because these people were confident they had no authority?
Something so simple as allowing blind men to see can never happen because of the blindness of the kings.
Maybe if we believed He had the power to do this, our blindness could be removed as well.
